πρὸ τῶνδε “in front of,” and so “on behalf of,” “for” these. Ellendt: “Non est ἀντὶ τῶνδε, nec ὑπὲρ τῶνδε, sed μᾶλλον s. μάλιστα τῶνδε, prae ceteris dignus propter auctoritatem et aetatem.” Rather ἀντὶ τῶνδε = “as their deputy”: ὑπὲρ τῶνδε = “as their champion”: πρὸ τῶνδε = “as their spokesman.” So Soph. OC 811 ἐρῶ γὰρ καὶ πρὸ τῶνδε. τίνι τρόπῳ with καθέστατε only: δείσαντες ἢ στέρξαντες =εἴτε ἐδείσατέ τι, εἴτε ἐστέρξατε (not πότερον δείσαντες; ἢ στέρξαντες;), “in what mood are ye set here, whether it be one of fear or of desire?”
