Then to say that man did once subsist without fire is a mistake, it being impossible that man should be without it. But we must acknowledge there are differences in this kind, as well as in other things. Thus heat has rendered the sea more beneficial, as having a greater portion of heat in it than other waters, from which it otherwise differs not at all. And as for those that have no need of outward fire, they do not avoid it because they do not want it, but because they abound in heat within themselves. So that the use of fire seems to be more excellent in this, that water is never in such a condition as not to want external aids, but fire, endued with manifold virtues, contents itself with its own sufficiency. Therefore, as he is the best commander who so manages the affairs of his city as not to have any need of foreign assistance, so that element excels that supplies us in such a manner as to want the least of other helps from without. And this is to be said of other creatures that have no need of external heat.

Now, to argue on the other side, a man may say thus, that whatever we singly and alone make use of is more profitable, since we are by our reason best fitted to choose what is best. For what is more useful and beneficial to us

than reason? And yet brute animals want fire. What then? Is it the less profitable, because found out by foresight of a higher power?

Then 1 w 4
to 1 w 6
say 1 w 9
that 1 w 13
man 1 w 16
did 1 w 19
once 1 w 23
subsist 1 w 30
without 1 w 37
fire 1 w 41
is 2 w 43
a 4 w 44
mistake 1 w 51
it 2 w 54
being 1 w 59
impossible 1 w 69
that 2 w 73
man 2 w 76
should 1 w 82
be 2 w 84
without 2 w 91
it 4 w 93
But 1 w 97
we 1 w 99
must 1 w 103
acknowledge 1 w 114
there 1 w 119
are 1 w 122
differences 1 w 133
in 2 w 135
this 1 w 139
kind 1 w 143
as 1 w 146
well 1 w 150
as 2 w 152
in 4 w 154
other 1 w 159
things 1 w 165
Thus 1 w 170
heat 1 w 174
has 1 w 177
rendered 1 w 185
the 3 w 188
sea 1 w 191
more 1 w 195
beneficial 1 w 205
as 4 w 208
having 1 w 214
a 18 w 215
greater 1 w 222
portion 1 w 229
of 1 w 231
heat 2 w 235
in 7 w 237
it 5 w 239
than 1 w 243
other 2 w 248
waters 1 w 254
from 1 w 259
which 1 w 264
it 6 w 266
otherwise 1 w 275
differs 1 w 282
not 1 w 285
at 7 w 287
all 1 w 290
And 1 w 294
as 5 w 296
for 1 w 299
those 1 w 304
that 3 w 308
have 1 w 312
no 3 w 314
need 1 w 318
of 2 w 320
outward 1 w 327
fire 2 w 331
they 1 w 336
do 1 w 338
not 2 w 341
avoid 1 w 346
it 7 w 348
because 1 w 355
they 2 w 359
do 2 w 361
not 3 w 364
want 1 w 368
it 8 w 370
but 1 w 374
because 2 w 381
they 3 w 385
abound 1 w 391
in 8 w 393
heat 3 w 397
within 1 w 403
themselves 1 w 413
So 1 w 416
that 4 w 420
the 10 w 423
use 3 w 426
of 3 w 428
fire 3 w 432
seems 1 w 437
to 2 w 439
be 6 w 441
more 2 w 445
excellent 1 w 454
in 10 w 456
this 2 w 460
that 5 w 465
water 2 w 470
is 7 w 472
never 1 w 477
in 11 w 479
such 1 w 483
a 38 w 484
condition 1 w 493
as 6 w 495
not 4 w 498
to 3 w 500
want 2 w 504
external 1 w 512
aids 1 w 516
but 2 w 520
fire 4 w 524
endued 1 w 531
with 4 w 535
manifold 1 w 543
virtues 1 w 550
contents 1 w 559
itself 1 w 565
with 5 w 569
its 2 w 572
own 1 w 575
sufficiency 1 w 586
Therefore 1 w 596
as 7 w 599
he 16 w 601
is 8 w 603
the 11 w 606
best 1 w 610
commander 1 w 619
who 1 w 622
so 1 w 624
manages 1 w 631
the 12 w 634
affairs 1 w 641
of 4 w 643
his 3 w 646
city 1 w 650
as 8 w 652
not 5 w 655
to 4 w 657
have 2 w 661
any 1 w 664
need 2 w 668
of 5 w 670
foreign 1 w 677
assistance 1 w 687
so 2 w 690
that 6 w 694
element 1 w 701
excels 1 w 707
that 7 w 711
supplies 1 w 719
us 6 w 721
in 12 w 723
such 2 w 727
a 57 w 728
manner 1 w 734
as 10 w 736
to 5 w 738
want 3 w 742
the 13 w 745
least 1 w 750
of 6 w 752
other 4 w 757
helps 1 w 762
from 2 w 766
without 3 w 773
And 2 w 777
this 3 w 781
is 12 w 783
to 6 w 785
be 8 w 787
said 1 w 791
of 7 w 793
other 5 w 798
creatures 1 w 807
that 8 w 811
have 3 w 815
no 8 w 817
need 3 w 821
of 8 w 823
external 2 w 831
heat 4 w 835
Now 1 w 839
to 7 w 842
argue 1 w 847
on 6 w 849
the 16 w 852
other 6 w 857
side 1 w 861
a 69 w 863
man 7 w 866
may 1 w 869
say 2 w 872
thus 1 w 876
that 9 w 881
whatever 1 w 889
we 3 w 891
singly 1 w 897
and 2 w 900
alone 1 w 905
make 1 w 909
use 4 w 912
of 9 w 914
is 13 w 916
more 3 w 920
profitable 1 w 930
since 1 w 936
we 4 w 938
are 2 w 941
by 1 w 943
our 1 w 946
reason 1 w 952
best 2 w 956
fitted 1 w 962
to 8 w 964
choose 1 w 970
what 2 w 974
is 14 w 976
best 3 w 980
For 1 w 984
what 3 w 988
is 15 w 990
more 4 w 994
useful 1 w 1000
and 3 w 1003
beneficial 2 w 1013
to 9 w 1015
us 10 w 1017
than 2 w 1021
reason 2 w 1027
And 3 w 1031
yet 1 w 1034
brute 1 w 1039
animals 1 w 1046
want 4 w 1050
fire 5 w 1054
What 1 w 1059
then 1 w 1063
Is 1 w 1066
it 19 w 1068
the 19 w 1071
less 1 w 1075
profitable 2 w 1085
because 3 w 1093
found 1 w 1098
out 5 w 1101
by 2 w 1103
foresight 1 w 1112
of 12 w 1114
a 93 w 1115
higher 1 w 1121
power 1 w 1126
