Thereupon Ammonius the philosopher, who was present, exclaimed, Not for the sun only, but for the whole heavens. For the suns course in passing from solstice to solstice must inevitably become shorter and not continue to be so large a part of the horizon as the mathematicians say it is, since the southern portion is constantly subject to a contracting movement, which brings it closer to the northern portion; and so our summer must become shorter and its temperature lower, as the sun turns about within narrower limits and touches fewer parallels of latitude at the solstitial points; moreover, the phenomenon observed at Syenê,[*] where the upright rods on the sun-dials cast no shadow at the time of the summer solstice, is bound to be a thing of the past; many of the fixed stars must have gone below the horizon, and some of them must be touching one another, or have become coalescent, as the space separating them has disappeared! But if, on the other hand, they are going to assert that, while all the other bodies are without change, the sun displays

v.5.p.359
irregularity in its movements, they will not be able to state the cause of the acceleration which affects the sun alone among so many bodies, and they will throw into confusion almost all the celestial mechanics, and into complete confusion those relating to the moon, so that they will have no need of measures of oil to prove the difference. In fact, the eclipses will prove it, as the sun more frequently casts a shadow on the moon and the moon on the earth; the other facts are clear, and there is no need to disclose in further detail the imposture in the argument.

But, said Cleombrotus, I myself actually saw the measure; for they had many of them to show, and that of this past year failed to come up to the very oldest by not a little.

Then, said Ammonius, taking up the argument again, this fact has escaped the notice of the other peoples among whom ever-burning fires have been cherished and kept alive for a period of years which might be termed infinite? But on the assumption that the report is true, is it not better to assign the cause to some coldness or moisture in the air by which the flame is made to languish, and so very likely does not take up nor need very much to support it? Or, quite the reverse, may we assign the cause to spells of dryness and heat? In fact, I have heard people say before this regarding fire, that it burns better in the winter,[*] being strongly compacted and condensed by the cold; whereas in warm, dry times it is very weak and loses its compactness and intensity, and if it burns in the sunlight, it does even worse, and takes hold of the fuel without energy, and consumes it more slowly. Best of all, the cause might be assigned to the oil itself; for it is not unlikely that in days of old it

contained incombustible material and water, being produced from young trees; but that later, being ripened on full-grown trees and concentrated, it should, in an equal quantity, show more strength and provide a better fuel, if the people at Ammons shrine must have their assumption preserved for them in spite of its being so strange and unusual.

When Ammonius had ceased speaking, I said, Wont you rather tell us all about the oracle, Cleombrotus? For great was the ancient repute of the divine influence there, but at the present time it seems to be somewhat evanescent.

As Cleombrotus made no reply and did not look up, Demetrius said, There is no need to make any inquiries nor to raise any questions about the state of affairs there, when we see the evanescence of the oracles here, or rather the total disappearance of all but one or two; but we should deliberate the reason wrhy they have become so utterly weak. What need to speak of others, when in Boeotia, which in former times spoke with many tongues because of its oracles, the oracles have now failed completely, even as if they were streams of flowing water, and a great drought in prophecy has overspread the land? For nowhere now except in the neighbourhood of Lebadeia has Boeotia aught to offer to those who would draw from the well-spring of prophecy. As for the rest, silence has come upon some and utter desolation upon others. And yet at the time of the Persian Wars many had gained a high repute, that of Ptoan Apollo no less than that of Amphiaraüs; Mys, as it seems, made

v.5.p.363
trial of both.[*] The prophetic priest of this oracle, accustomed in former times to use the Aeolic dialect, on that occasion took the side of the barbarians and gave forth an oracle such that no one else of those present comprehended it, but only Mys himself, since it is quite clear from the inspired language then used by the prophetic priest that it is not for barbarians ever to receive a word in the Greek tongue subservient to their command.[*]

The minion who was sent to the oracle of Amphiaraüs had, in his sleep[*] there, a vision of a servant of the god who appeared to him and tried first to eject him by word of mouth, alleging that the god was not there; then next he tried to push him away with his hands, and, when the man persisted in staying, took up a large stone and smote him on the head. All this was in harmony, as it were, with events to come; for Mardonius was vanquished while the Greeks were led, not by a king, but by a guardian and deputy of a king[*]; and he fell, struck by a stone j ust as the Lydian dreamed that he was struck in his sleep.

That time, too, was the most flourishing period of the oracle at Tegyrae, which place also by tradition is the birthplace of the god; and of the two streams of

water that flow past it, the inhabitants even to this day call the one Palm and the other Olive. [*] Now in the Persian Wars, when Echecrates was the prophetic priest, the god prophesied for the Greeks victory and might in war; and in the Peloponnesian War, when the people of Delos had been driven out of their island,[*] an oracle, it is said, was brought to them from Delphi directing them to find the place where Apollo was born, and to perform certain sacrifices there. While they were wondering and questioning the mere possibility that the god had been born, not in their island, but somewhere else, the prophetic priestess told them in another oracle that a crow would show them the spot. So they went away and, when they reached Chaeroneia, they heard the woman who kept their inn conversing about the oracle with some strangers who were on their way to Tegyrae. The strangers, as they were leaving, bade good-bye to the woman and called her by her name, which actually was Crow. Then the Delians understood the meaning of the oracle and, having offered sacrifice in Tegyrae, they found a way to return home a short time thereafter. There have been also more recent manifestations than these at these oracles, but now the oracles are no more; so it is well worth while, here in the precinct of the Pythian god, to examine into the reason for the change.

is 43 w 5855
said 5 w 5859
was 16 w 5863
brought 1 w 5870
to 56 w 5872
them 6 w 5876
from 6 w 5880
Delphi 1 w 5886
directing 1 w 5895
them 7 w 5899
to 57 w 5901
find 1 w 5905
the 156 w 5908
place 3 w 5913
where 4 w 5918
Apollo 2 w 5924
was 17 w 5927
born 1 w 5931
and 49 w 5935
to 58 w 5937
perform 1 w 5944
certain 1 w 5951
sacrifices 1 w 5961
there 6 w 5966
While 1 w 5972
they 8 w 5976
were 4 w 5980
wondering 1 w 5989
and 50 w 5992
questioning 1 w 6003
the 159 w 6006
mere 1 w 6010
possibility 1 w 6021
that 17 w 6025
the 160 w 6028
god 5 w 6031
had 8 w 6034
been 3 w 6038
born 2 w 6042
not 13 w 6046
in 88 w 6048
their 5 w 6053
island 2 w 6059
but 8 w 6063
somewhere 1 w 6072
else 2 w 6076
the 162 w 6080
prophetic 4 w 6089
priestess 1 w 6098
told 1 w 6102
them 8 w 6106
in 89 w 6108
another 2 w 6115
oracle 13 w 6121
that 18 w 6125
a 451 w 6126
crow 1 w 6130
would 2 w 6135
show 4 w 6139
them 9 w 6143
the 166 w 6146
spot 1 w 6150
So 1 w 6153
they 9 w 6157
went 2 w 6161
away 2 w 6165
and 52 w 6168
when 6 w 6173
they 10 w 6177
reached 1 w 6184
Chaeroneia 1 w 6194
they 11 w 6199
heard 2 w 6204
the 170 w 6207
woman 1 w 6212
who 8 w 6215
kept 2 w 6219
their 6 w 6224
inn 1 w 6227
conversing 1 w 6237
about 5 w 6242
the 172 w 6245
oracle 14 w 6251
with 7 w 6255
some 7 w 6259
strangers 1 w 6268
who 9 w 6271
were 5 w 6275
on 82 w 6277
their 7 w 6282
way 3 w 6285
to 60 w 6287
Tegyrae 3 w 6294
The 9 w 6298
strangers 2 w 6307
as 55 w 6310
they 12 w 6314
were 6 w 6318
leaving 1 w 6325
bade 3 w 6330
good-bye 1 w 6338
to 61 w 6340
the 175 w 6343
woman 2 w 6348
and 53 w 6351
called 1 w 6357
her 32 w 6360
by 13 w 6362
her 33 w 6365
name 1 w 6369
which 7 w 6375
actually 2 w 6383
was 18 w 6386
Crow 1 w 6390
Then 2 w 6395
the 176 w 6398
Delians 1 w 6405
understood 1 w 6415
the 177 w 6418
meaning 1 w 6425
of 63 w 6427
the 178 w 6430
oracle 15 w 6436
and 54 w 6439
having 1 w 6446
offered 1 w 6453

in 95 w 6464
Tegyrae 4 w 6471
they 13 w 6476
found 1 w 6481
a 483 w 6482
way 4 w 6485
to 63 w 6487
return 1 w 6493
home 1 w 6497
a 485 w 6498
short 3 w 6503
time 8 w 6507
thereafter 1 w 6517
There 3 w 6523
have 9 w 6527
been 4 w 6531
also 2 w 6535
more 6 w 6539
recent 1 w 6545
manifestations 1 w 6559
than 2 w 6563
these 1 w 6568
at 64 w 6570
these 2 w 6575
oracles 4 w 6582
but 9 w 6586
now 4 w 6589
the 183 w 6592
oracles 5 w 6599
are 6 w 6602
no 31 w 6604
more 7 w 6608
so 28 w 6611
it 52 w 6613
is 45 w 6615
well 2 w 6619
worth 1 w 6624
while 3 w 6629
here 18 w 6634
in 96 w 6636
the 184 w 6639
precinct 1 w 6647
of 65 w 6649
the 185 w 6652
Pythian 1 w 6659
god 6 w 6662
to 64 w 6665
examine 1 w 6672
into 3 w 6676
the 186 w 6679
reason 3 w 6685
for 17 w 6688
the 187 w 6691
change 2 w 6697
