These are the words of the melic poet Pindar [*] regarding the righteous in the other world:

For them doth the strength of the sun shine below, While night all the earth doth overstrow.
In meadows of roses their suburbs lie, Roses all tinged with a crimson dye. They are shaded by trees that incense bear, And trees with golden fruit so fair. Some with horses and sports of might, Others in music and draughts delight. Happiness there grows ever apace, Perfumes are wafted oer the loved place, As the incense they strew where the gods altars are And the fire that consumes it is seen from afar.
And a little farther on, in another lament for the dead, speaking of the soul, he says [*]:
In happy fate they all [*] Were freed by death from labours thrall. Mans body follows at the beck of death Oermastering. Alive is left The image of the stature that he gained, Since this alone is from the gods obtained. It sleeps while limbs move to and fro, But, while we sleep, in dreams doth show The choice we cannot disregard Between the pleasant and the hard.

The divine Plato has said a good deal in his treatise On the Soul about its immortality, and not a little also in the Republic and Meno and Gorgias, and here and there in his other dialogues. What is said in the dialogue On the Soul I will copy, with comments, and send you separately, as you desired. But for the present occasion these words, which were spoken

to Callicles the Athenian, the friend and disciple of Gorgias the orator, are timely and profitable. They say that Socrates, according to Platos account,[*] says: Listen to a very beautiful story, which you, I imagine, will regard as a myth, but which I regard as a story; for what I am going to say I shall relate as true. As Homer [*] tells the tale, Zeus, Poseidon, and Pluto divided the kingdom when they received it from their father. Now this was the custom regarding men even in the time of Cronus, and it has persisted among the gods to this daythat the man who has passed through life justly and in holiness shall, at his death, depart to the Islands of the Blest and dwell in all happiness beyond the reach of evil, while he who has lived an unjust and godless life shall go to the prison-house of justice and punishment, which they call Tartarus. The judges of these men, in the time of Cronus and in the early days of Zeuss dominion, were living, and judged the living, giving judgement on the day when the men were about to die. As time went on, for some reason the cases were not decided well. Accordingly Pluto and the supervisors in the Islands of the Blest went to Zeus and said to him that there kept coming to them at both places inadmissible persons. Very well, said Zeus, then I shall put a stop to this proceeding. The judgements are now rendered poorly; for, said he, those who are judged are judged with a covering on them, since they are judged while alive, and so, he continued, a good
many perhaps who have base souls are clad with beautiful bodies and ancestry and riches, and, when the judgement takes place, many come to testify for them that they have lived righteously. So not only are the judges disconcerted by these things, but at the same time they themselves sit in judgement with a covering on them, having before their own souls, like a veil, their eyes and ears and their whole body. All these things come between, both their own covering and that of those who are being judged. In the first place, then, all their foreknowledge of death must be ended; for now they have foreknowledge of it. So Prometheus has been told to put an end to this. Secondly, they must be judged divested of all these things; for they must be judged after they have died. The judge also must be naked, and dead, that he may view with his very soul the very soul of every man instantly after he has died, and isolated from all his kin, having left behind on earth all earthly adornments, so that his judgement may be just. I, therefore, realizing this situation sooner than you, have made my own sons judges, two from AsiaMinos and RhadamanthysÄîand one from EuropeÄîAeacus. These, then, as soon as they have died, shall sit in judgement in the meadow at the parting of the ways whence the two roads lead, the one to the Islands of the Blest and the other to Tartarus. The people of Asia shall Rhadamanthys judge, while Aeacus shall judge the people of Europe; and to Minos I shall give the prerogative of pronouncing final judgement in case the other
two be in any doubt, in order that the decision in regard to the route which men must take shall be as just as possible. This, Callicles, is what I have heard, and believe to be true; and from these words I draw the following inference‚—that death is, as it seems to me, nothing else than the severing of two things, soul and body, from each other.

Having collected and put together these extracts, my dearest Apollonius, with great diligence, I have completed this letter of condolence to you, which is most needful to enable you to put aside your present grief and to put an end to mourning, which is the most distressing of all things. In it is included also for your son, Apollonius, a youth so very dear to the gods, a fitting tribute, which is much coveted by the sanctifieda tribute due to his honourable memory and to his fair fame, which will endure for time eternal. You will do well, therefore, to be persuaded by reason, and, as a favour to your dear departed son, to turn from your unprofitable distress and desolation, which affect both body and soul, and to go back to your accustomed and natural course of life. Forasmuch as your son, while he was living among us, was sorry to see either you or his mother downcast, even so, now that he is with the gods and is feasting with them, he would not be well satisfied with your present course of life. Resume, therefore, the spirit of a brave-hearted and high-minded man who loves his offspring, and set free from all this wretchedness both yourself, the mother of the youth, and your relatives and friends, as you may do by pursuing a more tranquil form of life, which will be most gratifying both to your son and to all of us who are concerned for you, as we rightly should be.

are 10 w 2663
clad 1 w 2667
with 6 w 2671
beautiful 2 w 2680
bodies 1 w 2686
and 27 w 2689
ancestry 1 w 2697
and 28 w 2700
riches 1 w 2706
and 29 w 2710
when 3 w 2715
the 72 w 2718
judgement 3 w 2727
takes 1 w 2732
place 3 w 2737
many 2 w 2742
come 1 w 2746
to 23 w 2748
testify 1 w 2755
for 6 w 2758
them 4 w 2762
that 7 w 2766
they 6 w 2770
have 2 w 2774
lived 2 w 2779
righteously 1 w 2790
So 5 w 2793
not 5 w 2796
only 1 w 2800
are 11 w 2803
the 75 w 2806
judges 2 w 2812
disconcerted 1 w 2824
by 3 w 2826
these 4 w 2831
things 1 w 2837
but 2 w 2841
at 27 w 2843
the 77 w 2846
same 1 w 2850
time 5 w 2854
they 7 w 2858
themselves 1 w 2868
sit 1 w 2871
in 55 w 2873
judgement 4 w 2882
with 7 w 2886
a 210 w 2887
covering 2 w 2895
on 22 w 2897
them 6 w 2901
having 1 w 2908
before 1 w 2914
their 3 w 2919
own 1 w 2922
souls 2 w 2927
like 1 w 2932
a 212 w 2933
veil 1 w 2937
their 4 w 2943
eyes 1 w 2947
and 30 w 2950
ears 1 w 2954
and 31 w 2957
their 5 w 2962
whole 1 w 2967
body 2 w 2971
All 1 w 2975
these 5 w 2980
things 2 w 2986
come 2 w 2990
between 1 w 2997
both 2 w 3002
their 6 w 3007
own 2 w 3010
covering 3 w 3018
and 32 w 3021
that 8 w 3025
of 20 w 3027
those 2 w 3032
who 6 w 3035
are 12 w 3038
being 1 w 3043
judged 5 w 3049
In 3 w 3052
the 86 w 3055
first 1 w 3060
place 4 w 3065
then 3 w 3070
all 12 w 3074
their 7 w 3079
foreknowledge 1 w 3092
of 21 w 3094
death 4 w 3099
must 1 w 3103
be 10 w 3105
ended 1 w 3110
for 9 w 3114
now 3 w 3117
they 8 w 3121
have 3 w 3125
foreknowledge 2 w 3138
of 22 w 3140
it 19 w 3142
So 6 w 3145
Prometheus 1 w 3155
has 5 w 3158
been 1 w 3162
told 1 w 3166
to 25 w 3168
put 2 w 3171
an 43 w 3173
end 5 w 3176
to 26 w 3178
this 5 w 3182
Secondly 1 w 3191
they 9 w 3196
must 2 w 3200
be 12 w 3202
judged 6 w 3208
divested 1 w 3216
of 23 w 3218
all 13 w 3221
these 6 w 3226
things 3 w 3232
for 11 w 3236
they 10 w 3240
must 3 w 3244
be 13 w 3246
judged 7 w 3252
after 1 w 3257
they 11 w 3261
have 4 w 3265
died 1 w 3269
The 10 w 3273
judge 14 w 3278
also 4 w 3282
must 4 w 3286
be 14 w 3288
naked 1 w 3293
and 33 w 3297
dead 2 w 3301
that 9 w 3306
he 116 w 3308
may 1 w 3311
view 1 w 3315
with 8 w 3319
his 9 w 3322
very 2 w 3326
soul 4 w 3330
the 95 w 3333
very 3 w 3337
soul 5 w 3341
of 24 w 3343
every 1 w 3348
man 4 w 3351
instantly 1 w 3360
after 2 w 3365
he 118 w 3367
has 6 w 3370
died 2 w 3374
and 34 w 3378
isolated 1 w 3386
from 5 w 3390
all 14 w 3393
his 10 w 3396
kin 4 w 3399
having 2 w 3406
left 2 w 3410
behind 1 w 3416
on 24 w 3418
earth 2 w 3423
all 15 w 3426
earthly 1 w 3433
adornments 1 w 3443
so 19 w 3446
that 10 w 3450
his 11 w 3453
judgement 5 w 3462
may 2 w 3465
be 16 w 3467
just 4 w 3471
I 14 w 3473
therefore 1 w 3483
realizing 1 w 3493
this 6 w 3497
situation 1 w 3506
sooner 1 w 3512
than 1 w 3516
you 4 w 3519
have 5 w 3524
made 1 w 3528
my 2 w 3530
own 3 w 3533
sons 2 w 3537
judges 3 w 3543
two 2 w 3547
from 6 w 3551
Asia 1 w 3555
Minos 1 w 3561
and 35 w 3564
Rhadamanthys 1 w 3576
Äîand 1 w 3582
one 3 w 3585
from 7 w 3589
Europe 1 w 3595
ÄîAeacus 1 w 3604
These 2 w 3610
then 4 w 3615
as 22 w 3618
soon 2 w 3622
as 23 w 3624
they 12 w 3628
have 6 w 3632
died 3 w 3636
shall 5 w 3642
sit 3 w 3645
in 68 w 3647
judgement 6 w 3656
in 69 w 3658
the 99 w 3661
meadow 2 w 3667
at 34 w 3669
the 100 w 3672
parting 1 w 3679
of 25 w 3681
the 101 w 3684
ways 1 w 3688
whence 1 w 3694
the 102 w 3697
two 3 w 3700
roads 1 w 3705
lead 1 w 3709
the 103 w 3713
one 4 w 3716
to 27 w 3718
the 104 w 3721
Islands 3 w 3728
of 26 w 3730
the 105 w 3733
Blest 3 w 3738
and 38 w 3741
the 106 w 3744
other 4 w 3749
to 28 w 3751
Tartarus 2 w 3759
The 12 w 3763
people 1 w 3769
of 27 w 3771
Asia 2 w 3775
shall 6 w 3780
Rhadamanthys 2 w 3792
judge 18 w 3797
while 5 w 3803
Aeacus 2 w 3809
shall 7 w 3814
judge 19 w 3819
the 108 w 3822
people 2 w 3828
of 28 w 3830
Europe 2 w 3836
and 39 w 3840
to 29 w 3842
Minos 2 w 3847
I 16 w 3848
shall 8 w 3853
give 2 w 3857
the 109 w 3860
prerogative 1 w 3871
of 29 w 3873
pronouncing 1 w 3884
final 1 w 3889
judgement 7 w 3898
in 74 w 3900
case 2 w 3904
the 110 w 3907
other 5 w 3912
two 4 w 3915
be 17 w 3917
in 75 w 3919
any 3 w 3922
doubt 1 w 3927
in 76 w 3930
order 1 w 3935
that 11 w 3939
the 112 w 3942
decision 1 w 3950
in 77 w 3952
regard 6 w 3958
to 30 w 3960
the 113 w 3963
route 1 w 3968
which 6 w 3973
men 15 w 3976
must 5 w 3980
take 2 w 3984
shall 9 w 3989
be 18 w 3991
as 25 w 3993
just 5 w 3997
as 26 w 3999
possible 1 w 4007
This 1 w 4012
Callicles 2 w 4022
is 33 w 4025
what 2 w 4029
I 17 w 4030
have 7 w 4034
heard 1 w 4039
and 40 w 4043
believe 1 w 4050
to 31 w 4052
be 20 w 4054
true 2 w 4058
and 41 w 4062
from 8 w 4066
these 7 w 4071
words 3 w 4076
I 18 w 4077
draw 1 w 4081
the 115 w 4084
following 1 w 4093
inference 1 w 4102
that 12 w 4108
death 5 w 4113
is 34 w 4115
as 27 w 4118
it 23 w 4120
seems 1 w 4125
to 32 w 4127
me 33 w 4129
nothing 1 w 4137
else 1 w 4141
than 2 w 4145
the 116 w 4148
severing 1 w 4156
of 30 w 4158
two 5 w 4161
things 4 w 4167
soul 6 w 4172
and 42 w 4175
body 3 w 4179
from 9 w 4184
each 2 w 4188
other 6 w 4193
Having 1 w 4200
collected 1 w 4209
and 43 w 4212
put 3 w 4215
together 1 w 4223
these 8 w 4228
extracts 1 w 4236
my 3 w 4239
dearest 1 w 4246
Apollonius 1 w 4256
with 9 w 4261

I 19 w 4277
have 8 w 4281
completed 1 w 4290
this 7 w 4294
letter 1 w 4300
of 31 w 4302
condolence 1 w 4312
to 34 w 4314
you 5 w 4317

to 37 w 4378
put 5 w 4381
an 63 w 4383
end 6 w 4386
to 38 w 4388
mourning 1 w 4396
which 8 w 4402
is 37 w 4404
the 120 w 4407
most 2 w 4411
distressing 1 w 4422
of 32 w 4424
all 22 w 4427
things 5 w 4433
In 4 w 4436
it 25 w 4438

also 5 w 4452
for 13 w 4455

eternal 1 w 4628
You 1 w 4632
