ἐκβάλλω fut. -βαλῶ perf. -βέβληκα aor2 ἐξέβαλον to throw or cast out of a place, c. gen., Il., etc.; or absol. to throw out, throw overboard, Od.: also, like Lat. ejicere, to throw ashore, Od., Hdt.; but, ἐκβ. ἐς τὸ πέλαγος carry out to sea, Hdt.:—Mid. to put ashore, Hdt. to cast out of a place, banish, Hdt., etc. to expose on a desert island, Soph.; to expose a dead body, Soph. to divorce a wife, Dem. to cast out of his seat, depose a king, Aesch., etc. to strike out of, Lat. excutere, χειρῶν ἔκβαλλε κύπελλα Od.;—absol., δοῦρα ἐκβ. to fell trees (properly, to cut them out of the forest), Od. to strike open, break in, πύλας Eur. to let fall, χειρὸς ἔκβαλεν ἔγχος Il.:—metaph., ἔπος ἐκβ. to let fall a word, Hom., etc.; so, δάκρυα ἔκβ. Od.; ἐκβ. ὀδόντας to cast oneʼs teeth, Eur. to throw away, reject, Soph., etc.:— to reject a candidate for office, Dem.; to drive an actor from the stage, Lat. explodere, Dem. to lose, properly by oneʼs own fault, Soph., etc. to produce, of women, Plut.; so, of wheat, ἐκβ. στάχυν Eur. intr. (sub. ἑαυτόν) to go out, depart, Eur.; of a river, to empty, discharge itself, Plat.
