δύστηνος wretched, unhappy, unfortunate, disastrous, mostly of persons, Hom., Trag.; δυστήνων δέ τε παῖδες ἐμῷ μένει ἀντιόωσιν unhappy are they whose sons encounter me, Il. of things, Trag., Ar.: Sup. adv., δυστανοτάτως Eur. after Hom., in moral sense, wretched, like Lat. miser (a wretch), Soph. Prob. for δύσστηνος; but the origin of -στηνος is uncertain.
