ἄφεσις ἀφίημι a letting go, dismissal, Philipp. ap. Dem.:— a quittance or discharge from a bond, Dem.: exemption from service, Plut.: a divorce, Plut. a letting go (Lat. missio) of horses from the starting-post, and then the starting-post itself, ἰσώσας τἀφέσει τὰ τέρματα having made the winning-post one with the starting-post, i. e. having come back to the starting-post, Soph.
