The Root is !αεϝ ; cf. Lat. aevum, aetas, i. e. aeuitas.
always, for ever, Hom., etc.; often with other words of time, διαμπερὲς αἰεί, συνεχὲς αἰεί, ἐμμενὲς αἰεί, Hom.; ἀεὶ καθʼ ἡμέραν, καθʼ ἡμέραν ἀεί, ἀεὶ καὶ καθʼ ἡμέραν, ἀεὶ κατʼ ἐνιαυτόν, ἀεὶ διὰ βίου, etc., Plat., etc.; v. εἰσαεί:—ὁ ἀεὶ χρόνος eternity, Hdt., Plat.; οἱ ἀεὶ ὄντες the immortals, Xen., etc.:—but, ὁ αἰεὶ βασιλεύων the king for the time being, Hdt.; τοῖσι τούτων αἰεὶ ἐκγόνοισι to their descendants for ever, Hdt.
