ψάμμος ψάμμος, ἡ, sand, so called from its loose, crumbling nature (from ψάω), Od., etc.:—proverb., ψάμμος ἀριθμὸν περιπέφευγεν Pind. ἡ ψ. the sandy desert of Libya, Hdt. Both ψάμμος and ψάμαθος sometimes drop ψ and become ἄμμος, ἄμαθος.
