trans., in pres., fut., and aor1 act., to bring forth, produce, put forth leaves, etc., Hom., etc.; so, τρίχας ἔφυσεν made the hair grow, Od.: of a country, φύειν καρπόν τε καὶ ἄνδρας Hdt.
of men, to beget, engender, generate, Lat. procreare, Eur., etc.;— ὁ φύσας the begetter, father (opp. to ὁ φύς, the son, v. infr. B. I. 2), Soph.; and of both parents, οἱ φύσαντες Eur.: metaph., ἥδʼ ἡμέρα φύσει σε will bring to light thy birth, Soph.; χρόνος φύει ἄδηλα Soph.
of persons in regard to themselves, φ. πώγωνα to grow or get a beard, Hdt.; φ. πτερά Ar.: hence the joke in φύειν φράτερας, v. φράτηρ.
metaph., φρένας φύειν to get understanding, Soph.; δόξαν φύειν to form a high opinion of oneself, Hdt.
