φέρτατος φέρτατος, η, ον bravest, best, Hom.:—of things, κακῶν φέρτατον the best, i. e. least bad, of two evils, Il. in form φέριστος, Il.; mostly in voc. φέριστε, Il., Aesch., Soph. comp., φέρτερος, η, ον, braver, better, Hom.:— πολὺ φέρτερόν ἐστιν ʼtis much better, Hom.;— τέττιγος φέρτερον ᾄδεις, as adv., Theocr. The posit. occurs in προφερής· perh. the Root is φέρεσθαι, so that the orig. sense would be quick in action, vigorous.
