properly, a goat-singer (v. τραγῳδία) , i. e. a tragic poet and singer, these characters being orig. one, Ar.:—later, when the poets ceased to act, the term meant a tragedian or tragic actor, the tragic poet being called τραγῳδοποιός or τραγῳδοδιδάσκαλος.

the pl. is often used = τραγῳδία, ἐν τοῖσι τραγῳδοῖς in tragedy, Ar., Dem., etc.
