σπουδή σπουδή, ἡ, σπεύδω haste, speed, Hdt., etc.; ὅκως σπουδῆς ἔχει τις according as one makes speed, Hdt. zeal, pains, exertion, trouble, Od., Attic: —σπουδὴν ποιεῖσθαι, c. inf., to take pains to do a thing, Hdt.; c. gen., σπουδήν τινος ποιήσασθαι to make much ado about a thing, Hdt.; so, σπ. ἔχειν τινός or εἴς τι Eur.; σπουδῇ ὅπλων with great attention to the arms, Thuc.:—in pl. zealous exertions, Hdt., Eur.; also party feelings, rivalries, Hdt., Ar. zeal, earnestness, seriousness, Eur., etc. an object of attention, a serious engagement, Eur. σπουδῇ, as adv. in haste, hastily, Od., Hdt., Attic with great exertion, with difficulty, hardly, scarcely, Hom. earnestly, seriously, urgently, Eur., etc.; πολλῇ σπ. very busily, Hdt., etc.; so with Preps., ἀπὸ σπουδῆς in earnest, seriously, Il.; μετὰ σπουδῆς Xen.
