ῥέω to flow, run, stream, gush, Hom., etc.:—with dat. of that which flows, πηγὴ ῥέει ὕδατι the fountain runs with water, Il.; ῥέεν αἵματι γαῖα Il.; ῥεῖ γάλακτι πέδον Eur.; of a river, μέγας ῥεῖ runs with full stream, Hdt.; so, πολὺς ῥεῖ, metaph. of men, Aesch.; of a river, also, ῥ. ἀπὸ χιόνος to derive its stream from melted snow, Hdt.:—proverb., ἄνω ῥέειν to flow backwards, of impossibilities, Eur. metaph. of things, ἐκ χειρῶν βέλεα ῥέον from their hands rained darts, Il.; of a flow of words, ἀπὸ γλώσσης μέλιτος γλυκίων ῥέεν αὐδή Il.; absol., of the tongue, to run glibly, Aesch. (cf.
