that which is held before: hence,
a screen, cloak, Thuc.: a plea, pretence, pretext, ostensible cause, Soph.; so, πρ. τοῦ λόγου Hdt.; πρ. ποιεῖσθαι ὡς ἐπʼ Ἀθήνας ἐλαύνει to make a pretence or show of marching against Athens, Hdt.; c. inf., πρ. ποιούμενοι μὴ προδώσειν to pretend that they will not betray, Thuc.; also, πρ. ποιεῖσθαί τι to put forward as a screen or disguise, Plat.:— πρόσχημα, acc. absol., by way of pretext, Hdt.
outward show, ornament, as Miletus is called πρ. τῆς Ἰωνίης, Ioniaʼs chief ornament, Hdt.; and the Pythian games τὸ κλεινὸν Ἑλλάδος πρ. ἀγῶνος, Soph.; πρ. τῆς τραγῳδίας the outward show of tragedy, Ar.
