metaph. to be on the wing, flutter, Lat. volitare, of uncertain hopes, Pind., Soph.; of fickle natures, Eur.; ὄρνις πετόμενος a bird ever on the wing, Ar.; πετόμενόν τινα διώκεις you are chasing a butterfly" Plat.
