a labourer, workman:—the πενέσται were the Thessalian serfs, ascripti glebae, Ar., Xen., etc. Like the Εἵλωτες in Laconia, they were orig. a conquered tribe, afterwards increased by prisoners of war, and formed a link between the freemen and the born slaves.
