ἀνάσσω
to be lord, master, owner, to rule, in a place, c. dat., Ἄργεϊ, νήσοισι ἀν.; or c. gen. to be lord of, rule over, Τενέδοιο, Ἀργείων Hom.: also, μετʼ ἀθανάτοισι ἀν. to be first among the immortals, Il.:—Mid., τρὶς ἀνάξασθαι γένεα ἀνδρῶν to have been king for three generations, Od.:—Pass. to be ruled, Hom.
in Trag. metaph. of things, κώπης ἀνάσσειν, etc., Eur., cf. ἄναξ IV:—Pass., παρʼ ὅτῳ σκῆπτρον ἀνάσσεται by whom the sceptre is held as lord, Soph.
