an assembly of the people, opp. to the Council of Chiefs, Hom.: —καθίζειν ἀγορήν to hold an assembly, opp. to λύειν ἀγ. to dissolve it; ἀγορήνδε καλέειν, κηρύσσειν, Hom.; so, ἀγορὰν συνάγειν, συλλέγειν Xen.
the place of Assembly, Hom.; used not only for debating, trials, and other public purposes, but also as a market-place, like the Roman Forum, Attic; but to lounge in the market was held to be disreputable, cf. ἀγοραῖος.
the business of the ἀγορά, public speaking, gift of speaking, mostly in pl., Hom.
