ἀγορά ἀγείρω βουλή an assembly of the people, opp. to the Council of Chiefs, Hom.: —καθίζειν ἀγορήν to hold an assembly, opp. to λύειν ἀγ. to dissolve it; ἀγορήνδε καλέειν, κηρύσσειν, Hom.; so, ἀγορὰν συνάγειν, συλλέγειν Xen. the place of Assembly, Hom.; used not only for debating, trials, and other public purposes, but also as a market-place, like the Roman Forum, Attic; but to lounge in the market was held to be disreputable, cf. ἀγοραῖος. the business of the ἀγορά, public speaking, gift of speaking, mostly in pl., Hom. things sold in the ἀγορά, the market, Lat. annona; ἀγορὰν παρασκευάζειν to hold a market, Thuc. as a mark of time, ἀγορὰ πλήθουσα or ἀγορᾶς πληθώρη the forenoon, when the market-place was full, Hdt.; opp. to ἀγορῆς διάλυσις, the time just after mid-day, when they went home, Hdt.
