the part of the year between the rising of Sirius and of Arcturus (i. e. the end of July, all Aug., and part of Sept.), the end of summer, Od.: —later it was used for autumn, though φθινόπωρον or μετόπωρον were the proper terms for autumn, Ar., Xen.
since it was the fruit-time, it came to mean the fruit itself, Soph., Plat.
metaph. summer-bloom, i. e. the bloom of youth, Pind.
