ὅπλον .ὅπλον, ου, τό, a tool, implement, mostly in pl.: a shipʼs tackle, tackling, Od., Hes.: esp. ropes, Od., Hdt.:—in sg. a rope, Od. tools, of smithsʼ tools, Hom.:—in sg., ὅπλον ἀρούρης a sickle, Anth.; δείπνων ὅπλον, of a wine-flask, Anth. in pl., also, implements of war, arms, Il., etc.:—rarely in sg., a weapon, Hdt., Eur. in Attic, ὅπλον was the large shield, from which the men-at-arms took their name of ὁπλῖται, Ar., Thuc., etc.:—then, in pl., heavy arms, Hdt., Attic; ὅπλων ἐπιστάτης ὁπλίτης, Aesch.; whence, ὅπλα, ὁπλῖται, men-at-arms, Soph., Thuc., etc. τὰ ὅπλα, also, the place of arms, camp, Hdt., Xen.; ἐκ τῶν ὅπλων προϊέναι Thuc. phrases, ἐν ὅπλοισι εἶναι to be in arms, under arms, Hdt.; εἰς τὰ ὅπλα παραγγέλλειν Xen.; ἐφʼ ὅπλοις or παρʼ ὅπλοις ἧσθαι Eur.; μένειν ἐπὶ τοῖς ὅπλοις Xen.; ὅπλα τίθεσθαι, v. τίθημι A. 1. 7.
