a tall umbelliferous plant, Lat. ferula, with a hollow, pithy stalk, in which Prometheus conveyed fire from heaven to earth, Hes. The stalks furnished the Bacchanalian wands (θύρσοι) , Eur., (cf. ναρθηκο-φόρος); they were also used for canes by schoolmasters, Xen.
