ἀνάγκη ἄγχω force, constraint, necessity, Hom., etc.; ἀνάγκηι perforce, of necessity, or in act. sense, forcibly, by force, Hom.; so, ὑπʼ ἀνάγκης, ἐξ ἀνάγκης, διʼ ἀνάγκης, πρὸς ἀνάγκην, κατʼ ἀνάγκην, Attic:— ἀνάγκη ἐστί, c. inf., it is matter of necessity to do a thing, Hom., etc.; c. dat. pers., ἀν. μοι σχεθεῖν Aesch.:—in Trag., πολλή γʼ ἀνάγκη, πολλή στʼ ἀνάγκη or πολλή μʼ ἀνάγκη, with which an inf. must be supplied. actual force, violence, torture, Hdt., etc.; metaph., δολοποιὸς ἀν., i. e. the stratagem of Nessus, Soph. bodily pain, anguish, distress, κατʼ ἀνάγκην ἕρπειν painfully, Soph.; ὑπʼ ἀνάγκης βοᾶν Soph. like Lat. necessitudo, the tie of blood, relationship, kindred, Lys., etc.
