a whip, scourge, Hom., Hdt., etc.; ἵππου μ. a horsewhip, Hdt.; ὑπὸ μαστίγων βαίνειν to advance under the lash, of soldiers flogged on, Hdt.; so, τοξεύειν ὑπὸ μ. Xen.
metaph. a scourge, plague, Il., Aesch.; διπλῇ μ., τὴν Ἄρης φιλεῖ, i. e. fire and sword, Aesch.; μ. Θεοῦ of sickness, NTest.
