at Athens, a liturgy, i. e. a public duty, which the richer citizens discharged at their own expense.—The ordinary liturgies (ἐγκύκλιοι) were the γυμνασιαρχία, χορηγία, and ἑστίασις: the extraordinary, such as the τριηραρχία, were reserved for special occasions.
