ἄγκυρα ἄγκος Lat. ancora, an anchor, first in Alcae. and Theogn., for in Hom. we hear only of εὐναί, i. e. stones used as anchors; ἄγκυραν βάλλεσθαι, καθιέναι, μεθιέναι, ἀφιέναι to cast anchor, Pind., Hdt., etc.; so, ἐπὶ δυοῖν ἀγκύραιν ὁρμεῖν, i. e. "to have two strings to oneʼs bow," Dem.; cf. ὀχέω; ἐπὶ τῆς αὐτῆς (sc. ἀγκύρας) ὁρμεῖν τοῖς πολλοῖς, i. e. "to be in the same boat" with the many, Dem.
