ἀμύνω From Root !μυν, with α prefixed, cf. Lat. munio, moenia. to keep off, ward off, Hom.: c. acc. of the person or thing to be kept off, c. dat. of pers. for or from whom the danger is kept off, Δαναοῖσιν λοιγὸν ἀμύνειν to ward off ruin from the Danai, Il.:— the dat. is often omitted, λοιγὸν ἀμύνει Il. c. dat. pers. to defend, assist, aid, succour, Hom., etc. c. gen. from whom danger is kept off, Τρῶας ἄμυνε νεῶν he kept the Trojans off from the ships, Il., etc. absol. to repel assaults, to aid, Il.; τὰ ἀμύνοντα means of defence, Hdt. rarely c. acc., like Mid. ΙΙ, to requite, repay, Soph.
