generally, a groundwork, foundation, basement of a temple or altar, Hdt., Soph., etc.:—metaph., κρηπὶς σοφῶν ἐπέων Pind.; οὐδέπω κρηπὶς κακῶν ὕπεστι we have not yet got to the bottom of misery, Aesch.; ἡ ἐγκράτεια ἀρετῆς κρηπίς self-control is the foundation of virtue, Xen.
