ἀμολγός a word of uncertain sense:—Hom. always joins νυκτὸς ἀμολγῶι, in the hours before daybreak, or the hours after sunset, i. e. generally, at night-time, Il. (The supposition that ἀμολγός meant milking-time (from ἀμέλγω) will not suit the sense. It is said that ἀμολγός was an old word for ἀκμή, so that νυκτὸς ἀμ. means the dead of night.)
