κλῆρος a lot; in Hom., each man marks his own lot, and they are thrown into a helmet, and the first which came out was the winning lot. a casting lots, drawing lots, Eur.; many officers at Athens obtained their offices by lot, as opp. to election (χειροτονία, αἵρεσις) , Xen., Arist.; cf. κύαμος II. an allotment of land assigned to citizens (cf. κληρουχία) , Hdt., Thuc., etc. any piece of land, a portion, farm, Hom., etc. in Eccl. the clergy, as opp. to the laity.
