a covering, used only of flowers and fruit:
the shell or pod of plants, Hdt.; κάλυκος ἐν λοχεύμασι, i. e. when the fruit is setting, Aesch.
the calyx of a flower, a bud, a rose-bud, Hhymn., Theocr.
in Il. 18. 401, κάλυκες seem to be earrings like flower-cups.
