with two chief senses, Confirmative and Interrogative:
TO CONFIRM an assertion, in truth, truly, verily, of a surety, Hom., etc.; often strengthd. by other Particles, as ἦ ἄρα, ἦ δή, ἦ δή που, ἦ μάλα, etc.;—and to express doubt, ἦ που;—ἦ μήν, Ionic and Epic ἦ μέν, ἦ μάν, used in protestations and oaths, σὺ μοι ὄμοσσον, ἦ μέν μοι ἀρήξειν Hom., etc.
in INTERROG. sentences, Lat. num? pray? or can it be?— also ἦ οὐκ . . ; Lat. nonne? Particles are often added to this ἦ, ἦ ῥα, ἦ ἄρα δή, etc.
