electron, a word sometimes used to denote amber, as prob. in Hom., Hes. and Hdt.;—sometimes pale gold, a compound of 1 part of silver to 4 of gold, Soph., etc.—In Ar. ἐκπιπτουσῶν τῶν ἠλέκτρων, the ἤλεκτροι are prob. the pegs of the lyre made of or inlaid with electron.
