Eur. trans. to speed by rowing; metaph., γόων ἐρέσσετʼ πίτυλον ply the measured stroke of lamentation, Aesch.:—Pass. to be rowed, Eur.; of birds, πτερύγων ἐρετμοῖσιν ἐρεσσόμενοι with the oarage of wings (cf. Virgilʼs remigio alarum), Eur. generally, to put in quick motion, ply, τὸν πόδα Eur.: —metaph., ἐρ. ἀπειλάς to set threats in motion, Soph.; ἐρ. μῆτιν Soph.:—Pass., of a bow, to be plied, handled, Soph. to row through the sea, Anth.
