trans. to speed by rowing; metaph., γόων ἐρέσσετʼ πίτυλον ply the measured stroke of lamentation, Aesch.:—Pass. to be rowed, Eur.; of birds, πτερύγων ἐρετμοῖσιν ἐρεσσόμενοι with the oarage of wings (cf. Virgilʼs remigio alarum), Eur.
