(sc. πυρί) Il.; ἐπ. ἑωυτὸν ἐς τὸ πῦρ Hdt. to lay on, Lat. applicare, ἵπποις ἐπέβαλλεν ἱμάσθλην Od.; ἐπιβ. πληγάς τινι Xen.:— to lay on as a tax, tribute, fine or penalty, τί τινι Hdt., Attic ἐπιβ. σφραγῖδα to affix a seal, Hdt. to add, ἐπ. (sc. χοῦν) to throw on more and more earth, Thuc.:—metaph. to mention, Lat. mentionem injicere rei, τι Soph. intr. (sub. ἑαυτόν) , to throw oneself upon, go straight towards, c. acc., Od. to fall upon or against, τινί Plat. (sub. τὸν νοῦν) to apply oneself to a thing, devote oneself to it, c. dat., Plut.: to give oneʼs attention to, think on, NTest. to follow, come next, Plut. to belong to, fall to, τινί Hdt., Dem.:—also impers. c. acc. et inf. it falls to oneʼs very lot, it concerns one to do a thing, Hdt.:— τὸ ἐπιβάλλον (sc. μέρος) the portion that falls to one, Hdt., NTest. Mid., c. gen., to throw oneself upon, desire eagerly, Il. c. acc. to put upon oneself, Eur.: metaph. to take possession of, take upon oneself, Thuc. in Pass. to be put upon, ἐπιβεβλημένοι τοξόται archers with their arrows on the string, Xen.
