ἐπαινέω Epic imperf. ἐπῄνεον fut. -έσω or -έσομαι poet. ήσω poetic but not Attic are ἐπ-αινήσω, ἐπ-ῄνησα aor1 ἐπῄνεσα aor1 ἐπῄνησα perf. ἐπῄνεκα Pass., fut. -αινεθήσομαι aor1 ἐπῃνέθην to approve, applaud, commend, Lat. laudare, Hom., etc.; ἐπ. τινά τι to commend one for a thing, Aesch. to compliment publicly, panegyrize, Thuc. to undertake to do, c. inf., Eur. the aor. ἐπῄνεσα is in Attic used in a pres. sense, ἐπῄνεσʼ ἔργον I commend it, Soph.: and absol., well done! Ar. to recommend, exhort, advise, c. inf., Soph. as a civil form of declining an offer, I thank you, I am much obliged, κάλλιστʼ, ἐπαινῶ Ar.; so, ἐπ. τὴν κλῆσιν to decline it, Xen. of Rhapsodists, to declaim, Plat.
