to stretch or strain tightPass., δίφρος ἱμᾶσιν ἐντέταται is hung on tight-stretched straps, Il.; γέφυραι ἐντεταμέναι a bridge with the mooring-cables made taught, Hdt.; ἐντεταμένου τοῦ σώματος being braced up, Plat.
to stretch a bow tight, i. e. string it for shooting (cf. ἐντανύω) , Eur.; so in Mid. to string oneʼs bow, Eur.:—Pass., τόξα ἐντεταμένα bows ready strung, Hdt.
ἐντείνειν ναῦν ποδί to keep a shipʼs sail taught by the sheet, Eur.
to tie tight, Eur.
metaph. to strain, exert:—so in Mid., φωνὴν ἐντεινάμενος Aeschin.; ἐντεινάμενοι τὴν ἁρμονίαν pitching the tune high, Ar.:—and in Pass., ἐντεινόμενος, on the stretch, eager, Xen.
