ἀνταλλά-σσω, Att. ἀνταλλά-ττω,
A). exchange one thing with another, δάκρυα δ’ ἀνταλλάσσετε τοῖς τῆσδε μέλεσι Tr. 351 ; τὴν ἀξίωσιν τῶν ὀνομάτων ἐς τὰ ἔργα ἀ. they changed the signification of the names in relation to things, 3.82 ; τὴν ψυχὴν τοῦ χρυσίου 3.113 .
II). more freq. in Med., take in exchange, ἄνδρα Ch. 133 ; ἀνταλλάσσεσθαί τί τινος take one thing in exchange for another, Hel. 1088 , etc.; τι ἀντί τινος 16.5 ; ἀνταλλάσσεσθαι τῇ διανοίᾳ interchange in thought, Tht. 189c ; θάνατον ἀνταλλάξεται shall receive death in exchange, i.e. as a punishment, Ph. 1633 :—so in Pass., ἀντηλλαγμένου τοῦ ἑκατέρων τρόπου having made an interchange of each other's custom, i.e. having each adopted the way of the other, 4.14 .
