A). comrade in war, esquire, denoting the slight subordination in which one hero stood to another, as Meriones to Idomeneus , Il. 8.263 , 10.58 , etc.; Phoenix to Peleus, 23.360 ; so, = ὑπασπιστής , Hdt. 5.111 .
2). generally, follower, attendant, B. 17.35 , Hdt. 9.50 , 51 , A. Ch. 769 , Supp. 492 , 954 , S. Ant. 1108 ; ὀ. μήλων a shepherd, Pi. P. 9.64 ; of a female, h.Cer. 440 . —Cf. ὀπηδός.
