A). belonging to a return (not in Il.), ν. ἦμαρ the day of return, i. e. the return itself, Od. 1.9 , 168 , 3.233 , etc.; ν. φάος A. Pers. 261 ; ν. σωτηρία ib. 797 ; ν. ἦτορ AP 5.231 (Paul. Sil.).
2). able or likely to return, ἐπεί ῥ’ ἔτιν. ἐστι Od. 4.806 ; ἀπόλωλε καὶ οὐκέτι ν. ἐστι 19.85 , cf. A. Ag. 618 ; ν. κινεῖν πόδα, v. πούς.
II). (νόστος II) of plants and fruit, yielding a high return, productive, Thphr. CP 4.13.2 ( Comp. and Sup.) ; φέρε δ’ ἀγρόθι νόστιμα πάντα all things in abundance, Call. Cer. 136 ; τὸν. τῶν καρπῶν S.E. M. 7.17 .
2). succulent, nutritious, τροφή Sor. 1.54 ( Comp.) ; of fish, Aët. 9.30 ( Sup.) ; τὸ λιπαρὸν καὶ ν. Plu. 2.684d ; τὸ -ώτατον ὁ καπνὸς παραλαβὼν ἐς τὸν οὐρανὸν οἴχεται Luc. Luct. 19 .
3). wholesome, ὕδωρ J. BJ 4.8.3 ( Comp.) ; γένοιτο αὐτῷ .. τὰ ν. ἄνοστα BCH 51.148 (Tab. Defix., Cyprus); palatable, Phld. D. 3.13 , Hsch. s.v. ἕσμιον :—in this sense expld. διὰ τὸ ἡδὺ τοῦ Ὁμηρικοῦ νόστου Eust. 1383.40 .
4). τὸ ν., of resin obtained from galbanum, starch from wheat, the valuable part, Dsc. 3.83 , 2.101 ; so τὸ ἰλυῶδες καὶ ν. Id. 5.75 .
III). metaph., τὸ ν. [τοῦ λεγομένου] the substance, kernel, M.Ant. 2.15 .
