A). tame, make tame,
1). prop. of wild beasts, Arist. HA 488a29 ( Pass.), Gp. 16.21.2 ; but simply, to be pacified, Pl. R. 493b ( Pass.); δώροις Id. Lg. 906d .
2). of plants and trees, reclaim, cultivate, ἡ. ἐξ ἀγρίων Hp. Aër. 12 , cf. Thphr. CP 2.14.1 , 5.15.6 ; also of land, Crates Com. 55 .
3). of countries, clear them of robbers and wild beasts, as Hercules and Theseus did, ναυτιλίαισι πορθμὸν ἁμερώσαις Pi. I. 4(3).57 ; χθόνα ἀνήμερον τιθέντες ἡμερωμένην A. Eu. 14 ; or to cultivate them, Thphr. CP 5.15.6 ,al.
4). of men also, civilize, humanize, λόγῳ Pl. R. 554d ; ἁρμονίᾳ τε καὶ ῥυθμῷ ib. 442a ; δίκη πάντα ἡμέρωκεν τὰ ἀνθρώπινα Id. Lg. 937e ; τὸ θυμούμενον Eus.Mynd. 1 :— Pass., ὑπὸ παιδείας Pl. Lg. 935a .
b). tame by conquest, subdue, ἡμερώσας δὲ Αἴγυπτον ἐξυβρίσασαν Hdt. 7.5 :— Med., πᾶν ἔθνος ἡμερούμενος βασιλέϊ Id. 5.2 , cf. 4.118 :— Pass., πόθεν σου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς ἡμέρωται; whence that crest-fallen look? Mim.Oxy. 413.153 .
