II). ἐπίτονος (sc. ἱμάς), , a rope for stretching or tightening, back-stay of a mast (opp. πρότονος), ἐπ’ αὐτῷ [ἱστῷ] ἐπίτονος βέβλητο, βοὸς ῥινοῖο τετευχώς Od. 12.423 (a στίχος ἀκέφαλος).
