A). halter by which a horse is tied to the manger, τῆς ἐπιφατνιδίας φ. X. Eq. 5.1 ; περιεζῶσθαι τὴν φ. Arist. Pol. 1324b16 ; οἱ ἵπποι ἀπὸ φορβειᾶς ἄγονται Str. 15.1.52 ; ἐκ φ. ἕλκειν [ὄνον] Luc. Asin. 51 .
II). mouthband of leather put like a halter round the lips of fifers or pipers, to assist them in regulating the sound, Ar. V. 582 (anap.), Plu. 2.456b : hence φυσᾷ .. φορβειᾶς ἄτερ blows the pipes without this check, i. e. too loud, S. Fr. 768 .
III). a bandage, Heliod. ap. Orib. 48.39 tit., Sor.l.c., Paul.Aeg. 6.92 .
