A). hair on the upper lip (which is the first to grow, cf. sq.), moustache, distd. from πώγων, Eub. 100 , cf. Phot., Suid.: generally, beard, A. Fr. 27 ; τὴν ὑ. ἄκουρον τρέφων Ar. V. 476 (lyr.); μολύνων τὴν ὑ. Id. Eq. 1286 (troch.); ἕλκοντες ὑπήνας letting the beard grow long, trailing beards, Id. Lys. 1072 ; ἄναξ ὑπήνης, of one with a huge beard, Pl.Com. 122 .
2). in Arist. HA 518b18 , it seems to mean the upper lip, καὶ τὴν ὑ. καὶ τὸ γένειον δασὺ ἔχειν, cf. Theoc. 20.22 .
