συνήγορ-ος ( Aeol., etc. συνάγορος [ᾱ] IG 12(2).526b28 (Eresus, iv B.C.), etc.), ον,(ἀγορά)
A). speaking with, of the same tenor with, μαντεῖα καινὰ τοῖς πάλαι ξ. Tr. 1165 :—as Subst., one who agrees with another, συνήγορόν μ’ ἔχεις Ag. 831 .
II). advocate, ἐάν τις .. ς. ὢν λαμβάνῃ χρήματα ἐπὶ ταῖς δίκαις ταῖς ἰδίαις ἢ δημοσίαις Lex ap. : 46.26
1). public advocate, chosen by the state, e.g. at Athens, to defend laws against proposed changes before the νομοθέται, ; or to conduct public prosecutions, 24.36 Ach. 715 (troch.), Eq. 1358 , V. 482 (troch.), Decr. ap. ; also ten appointed by lot annually to represent the state at the 2.833f εὔθυναι of magistrates, Ath. 54.2 ; two appointed by εἰσαγωγεῖς in connexion with assessments of tribute, IG 12.63.8 (dub.); in Boeotia the magistrates in charge of the εὔθυναι were called συνήγοροι, ib. 7.303.26 (Oropus), cf. Pol. 1322b11 .
b). ς. τοῦ ἱερωτάτου ταμιείου, = Lat. advocatus fisci, (Lydia, ii/iii A.D.); 25.124 ς. τοῦ ἐν Φρυγίᾳ ταμιείου καὶ τοῦ ἐν Ἀσίᾳ IGRom. 4.819 (Hierapolis).
