Lătĕrānus, a, a family name in the gens Claudia, Sextia, and Plautia.—So, Plautius Lateranus, Tac. A. 15, 49; 60; Juv. 8, 148.—The splendid mansion of these Laterani on Mons Caelius (egregiae Lateranorum aedes, Juv. 10, 17; and: Lateranae aedes, Prud. adv. Symm. 1, 587) was given by the emperor Constantine to the bishop of Rome; afterwards the seat of the popes; now the Lateran.
