abs-tēmĭus
abs-tēmĭus, a, um, adj. cf. temetum and temulentus, abstaining from intoxicating drinks, temperate, sober, ἄοινος. Lit.: sicca atque abstemia, Lucil. ap. Non. 68, 30: mulieres, Varr. ap. Non. ib.: vina fugit gaudetque meris abstemius undis, Ov. M. 15, 323 al.—Hence, In gen.: i. q. sobrius, temperate, abstinent, moderate: abstemius, herbis vivis et urticā, Hor. Ep. 1, 12, 7.—Pleon.: mulieres vini abstemiae, Plin. 22, 24, 54, § 115.— In later Lat. = jejunus, who is yet fasting, has not breakfasted, Aus. Idyll. praef. 11.
