πρόφασις ἡ [προ- 1 + φα-, φημί.] A profession or declaration. Adverbially in acc., as the cause that moves one, as the occasion (cf. ἐπίκλησις 2, χάρις 2.b) : κλαίουσα, ἐπὶ δὲ στενάχοντο γυναῖκες, Πάτροκλον πρόφασιν, σφῶν δʼ αὐτῶν κήδεʼ ἑκάστη Il. 19.302 (i.e. his death was the immediate occasion, and each had her own griefs as well). With genit. : εὐνῆς πρόφασιν (for the sake of . . .) Il. 19.262.
