A whip (following the indications of Il. 11.532, Il. 15.352, Il. 23.362 : Od. 6.316 ; see also Il. 23.500 under μάστις and Il. 20.171 under μαστίω); but μάστιξ in Il. 23.384 and κέντρον in Il. 23.387 are evidently represented as identical, and seem to be the same as the ἱμάσθλη of 582, and there are grounds for explaining all as a pliant rod with a metal point serving both as whip and goad (which involves taking ἱμάντες in Il. 23.363 in sense reins) : μάστιγι θοῶς ἐπεμαίεθʼ ἵππους Il. 5.748= Il. 8.392. Cf. (besides as above) Il. 5.226, 840, Il. 10.500, Il. 16.430, 479, 482= Il. 24.441, Il. 19.395, Il. 23.390, 510, 642, Il. 24.326 : Od. 6.81, 316.
