ἄρκιος [ἀρκέω in sense (3).] 1 Sufficient, ample; or perh., on which one may rely, certain, sure: μισθός Il. 10.304: Od. 18.358. 2 In neut. ἄρκιον with infin., expressing certainty that something must happen: ἀ. ἢ ἀπολέσθαι ἠὲ . . . (it must now be settled whether we are to . . . or to . . . ) Il. 15.502. So οὔ οἱ ἀ. ἐσσεῖται φυγέειν (he will not be able to rely on escaping, i.e. he certainly will not escape) Il. 2.393.
